Chater Road

DANCE

When the truth in words is no longer decipherable, then perhaps the most naked truth lies in the symbols of physical movements.

Chater Road is a three-lane road in Central, Hong Kong, named after Sir Paul Chater. It begins at its intersection with Pedder Street and Des Voeux Road Central in the west, and ends at Murray Road in the east. Before the Umbrella Revolution, on July 2nd 2014, the Police had arrested 511 people for illegally occupying Chater Road, 351 men and 160 women.

* Commissioned and produced by the Hong Kong Arts Festival, premiered at the 2015 Hong Kong Jockey Club Contemporary Dance Series

QUOTE / REVIEW

“Chater Road was performed in silence but would have resonated with greater nuance against a score. Lack of soundtrack does not automatically sink a piece, but it does put an extra burden on the dance to create atmosphere and convey emotion.”
